The Little Hawk girls’ track team competed at the second track meet of their season at Wartburg College on Tuesday, March 11.

“We really look at indoors as really hard practices,” Thos Trefz, the women’s distance coach said. “What we’re looking for is people getting out there and competing really hard, supporting their teammates, and the new kids learning the ropes.”

The 4x800m relay team of Soumba Traore ‘14, Morgan Sammons ‘14, Fanta Traore ‘16, and Hazel Crew ‘15 got second place in the event, along with Soumba and Fanta Traore and Sammons getting season’s bests.

“Kids got experience, kids were out there supporting their teammates, and I think at every level we competed really hard.” Trefz said.

The 4x800m relay teams wasn’t the only event the Little Hawks placed in. The Distance Medley Relay, run by Maddie Deprenger ‘16, Sarah Plock ‘15, Morgan Sammons ‘14, and Ellen Carman ‘14 also placed second, as did the 4×200 run by Delaney Johnson ‘16, Deprenger, Sashay Carroll ‘15 and Sara Blowers ‘15. In the individual events, Johnson placed third in the 55m dash and Mary Arch ‘14 placed second in the 1500m run. The team had a total of 12 season’s bests and 3 personal records.

“I think our 4×800 ran really well,” Trefz said. “I thought the 4×200 girls competed really hard.”

The last event of the night was the 4x400m relay. Carman, Soumba and Fanta Traore, and Plock brought City High to first place in this event, putting an end to an almost 7 hour for the Little Hawks.

“Winning that was a great way to finish off the meet.” Trefz said. “Having Sarah Plock on the end of that was something special.”

Plock recently finished her basketball season. Tuesday’s meet marked her first races of the season. Official practice began five weeks ago and the team has had two indoor meets.

“I think the season will turn out great.” Soumba Traore ‘14, team captain, said. “Everybody’s pitching in in different ways.”

The girls’ will compete in the MVC Indoor Meet on Tuesday, March 18 at the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls, IA.
