Girls Soccer Looks to Rebound Against Xavier

Looking to improve from the jamboree game against Iowa City Regina that resulted in a 0-0 tie on Monday, the City High girls soccer team prepares to take on Cedar Rapids Xavier in Cedar Rapids on Thursday April 10.

During the jamboree, the girls didn’t play as well as they would have liked according to Head Coach Sarah Bleeker. They kept the ball on the other side of the field for most of the game but couldn’t make any shots and turned the ball over many times. They played a lot of “boot ball” as Bleeker calls it or kicking and chasing. Before starting the regular season, Bleeker is looking to make improvements.

“We need to work on keeping possession,” Bleeker says. “If we work on our first touches and working together as a team, it should come naturally.”

Xavier has won the Class 2A state championship for the past nine years but the team is looking to make an impact for their first game.

“(Xavier) is still a strong program but we’d like to win,” Ruth Grace ’14 says. “We’d like to start out winning so people know us going to state wasn’t a fluke. We’re just trying to prove we’re here.”

The game will take place at Xavier High school at 4:15.
