Dreaming Divas: My Time on the City High Dance Team

Since I’ve attended school for some reason I’ve always been interested in dancing. I think that dancing really releases all your built up stress and brings out the inner you. Once I moved to Iowa in 2014 I discovered the group DreamDivas.

Being a member of  Dream Divas now for two years I have grown with the team and grown to have a strong passion for not only dance but performing. Being a member and being the head captain of Dream Divas, has taught me to “take one for the team” meaning sometimes you have to make sacrifices. Being a leader you always have to lead by example and you also have the weight of the team on your shoulders. If one person isn’t good you have to do everything you can to make sure that person is alright so that the team is always on one accord. This also gives me a good upper hand to be able to instantly build relationships on the team, because we have created a sisterly bond. I remember our very first competition the fall of 2015. Everyone was so nervous because we were going against a college dance team, people were throwing up and getting light headed, and I was laughing. They all looked at me weird and I replied “ calm down, just go and be yourself, all you have to do is go out and do it how we rehearsed.” After the whole competition we let out a sigh because WE WON FIRST PLACE. It was funny to me because of all the dramatic panicking.

Now we are past that and we now perform at City High, I can honestly agree that I love dancing at City High whether it’s at a football game, a pep assembly, or even a basketball game. When I walk out I’m  mostly nervous and excited, but once the sound of full supporting cheers ring out all of our nervousness disappears. Before any pep assembly I have at least fifteen people by the end of the week asking if my team and I are going to perform, and when I reply with a yes they get excited and anxious to see what we have.

Dream Divas is a team based on many types of dancing which sometimes may include hip hop , majorette , some ballet , lyrical dances , jazz , and much more. Many people have often compare us to the City High dance team who is very broad and diverse in their dancing. Destini Randle-Estes a Junior at City High and also a dancer on the Dream Divas stated “I’d love to do a competition with the City High dance team.”

In my opinion I feel like this would be fun as part of a pep assembly or something fun like that. I haven’t seen the dance team perform much but, I know that they’re great and very experienced in the dance field. Maybe in the nearby future there’ll be a competition between Dream Divas and City Dance team, but until then STAY TUNED………
