Chance the Rapper comes out with only his third mixtape Coloring Book, but with this drop he starts to show that he means business.

His previous mixtapes, 10 Day and Acid Rap, were released independently and were free to download. Coloring Book was produced by Chance’s group The Social Experiment among others, and featured popular artists such as Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Lil Yachty, and Justin Bieber.

Many songs on Coloring Book have vastly different sound than his previous two mixtapes. Chance incorporates gospel, jazz, soul, hip-hop, and even pop sounds into his new music and shows his christian and Chicago roots. In his new mixtape, you can see how Chance is maturing from 10 Day and Acid Rap, where he often rapped about his drug use during his adolescence. In Coloring Book, Chance includes verses speaking about gang violence in Chicago and raps about his connection with God.

Although Coloring Book shows a different style for Chance, he’s sure to incorporate his signature scat singing. He made me feel a bit nostalgic when he referenced the intro to Acid Rap by beginning his new song “All We Got” with “And we back, and we back, and we back.”

Coloring Book goes against what most modern hip-hop has become by adding jazz and gospel styles, and shows Chance’s roots and maturity.
