The City High women’s soccer team kicked off its season with its first official scrimmage, Saturday, April 1st. The team played North Scott, a 2A team from Eldridge, IA. Head coach, Michael Prunty, used this scrimmage as an experiment. He tried players in new positions and tested out new formations.

The game was an easy win for the Little Hawks. In the first half of the game, the women had good movement on and off the ball and did a great job using their goalie, Naomi Meurice ’19, as a way to reset and calm the game. The on the rise freshman, Kennedy Menzel ’20, scored her first goal of her high school career in the first half. She put the team up 1-0 over North Scott.

At halftime, City led 1-0, but this was not enough for Prunty. He knew his girls could do more that against a 2A team. In the second half of the game, there was a lot more offensive action from City. Sydney Schroder ’17, who has been on varsity since her freshman year, scored two goals within two minutes of each other to put City up 3-0. Grace Brown ’17, another four year varsity player, put the team up 4-0 with an incredible goal. Brown, who is more of a defensive player, had a great run down the center of the field and smashed the ball into the back of the net. The scrimmage gave everyone on the varsity roster a chance to play and even some who aren’t on the roster got playing time as well. Bella Epstein ’19, who is the JV1 starting goalie, got some playing time in the last 15 minutes of the game. Meurice, who got about nine minutes of playing time on the field last season, got to play on the field while Epstein got her time in goal.

This scrimmage gave the coaching staff an idea of how their starting lineup should look like for their future games. City’s first official game is against Pleasant Valley, Thursday April 6th at Pleasant Valley High School.
