As the final seconds counted down to the end of the 8-7 match, lifting his opponent into the air, Amos Lavela ’13 slammed him to the ground to earn a pin and giving him the win in his match while also getting the team win for City High.
The City High wrestling team had several great comebacks during their matches as they pulled ahead of Cedar Rapids Kennedy by a score of 42-39.
One of those comebacks arrived at 120 pounds. Alex Lemus ’13 was able to get into a scramble situation and ended up on top with his opponents back to the mat.
“It was a really close match,” Lemus said after his match, “but he just got kind of sloppy, and I took advantage of it.”
After two quick pins at 220 Matt Lee ’13 and heavyweight Ryan Maas ’14, The Little Hawks held a small lead.
“This season, (the wrestling team) have been a lot more focused on what we need to do,” Maas said after his two pins of the evening.
The final outcome of the night came down to the 195 pound match. Both wrestling teams surrounded the last weight class of the night. As Lavela trips his opponent into a bearhug like throw, pinned him in the third period of the match.
“It was very hard,” Lavela said gasping for air, but he did manage to smile for the camera at the end of the meet.
This Saturday, the Little Hawks will travel to the Cedar Rapids Dual Tournament at Kennedy High school and the team’s first home meet is on Thursday December 13th at 5:30pm.
