FOOTBALL PREVIEW: A position by position analysis

By The Little Hawk Sports Team

This week’s game:

Waterloo West

5 p.m. Sophomore Kick-Off

Dedication is scheduled in between the sophomore and varsity game.

Background:

The Little Hawks began their state championship defense last week by rolling Dubuque Senior 48 to 6.  This Friday night the Little Hawks play host to Waterloo West in their home opener.

Key Players that will Ignite the 2010 Little Hawks

QUARTERBACK:
Senior Andrew McNulty is stepping into the starting role with ease.  He may have had big shoes to fill, but made many important plays from the line of scrimmage and was well protected by the veteran offensive line in the opener.

RUNNING BACK:
Junior back Ronald Thompson is proving to be a brute running force for the rushing game.  His downhill running style should open up holes in the opposing team’s secondary.    Also, another play maker in the backfield is Senior Bobby Millard. Millard got the Little Hawks first score with a rushing touchdown.

WIDE RECEIVER:
Play fakes to Thompson made big pass plays possible from McNulty to senior wide receiver Connor Alberhasky.  Alberhasky, who was previously injured and positioned at running back, is showing signs of a tremendous year as a wide out.

OFFENSIVE LINE:
Senior Dan Minchk is the leader of a very strong and experienced offensive line. Seniors Aaron Johnson, Brad Gingerich, Cody Donnelly, and Nick Beckman help pave the way for running backs.

DEFENSIVE LINE:
Seniors Dan Minchk and Nick Beckman are anchors in the trenches. They stuff the running game for opposing offenses. Senior Cody Donnelly and junior Steve Ferentz are physical at their defensive end position. They bring a serious pass rush that will be seen against a passing Waterloo team.

LINEBACKER:
Seniors Adam Prybil and Todd Turner have limited rushing yardage for opposing teams each game. They cover the field from sideline to sideline preventing offenses from scoring. Their hard hitting ability strikes fear into the best offenses in the state.

SECONDARY:
Junior Jeremy Johnson is a  shutdown corner that will cut off half the field from opponents’ passing games. Senior Connor Alberhasky also shuts down the passing game and comes up for strong run support
