On November 6th and 7th, City High sent four swimmers and one diver to the Iowa state swimming and diving championship in Marshalltown. Andrea Adam ‘17 competed in one-meter diving on Friday, while Alix Sharp ‘16, Alayna McCafferty ‘16, Devan O’Rourke ‘17 and Laura Lorenger ‘18 swam the following Saturday.

“I think the meet went very well,” said Sharp ‘16. “It is not really expected to drop time at state, but everyone was right around their times.”

To qualify for state, swimmers must place in the top 25 at districts, and divers must place in the top 30. Their performance at districts determines how they will be ranked going into the meet.

Adam received a score of 409.85 from the judges, which allowed her to place 10th overall, awarding City High seven points for the overall team score.

The swimmers competed in four events: the 200 freestyle relay, the 200 individual medley, the 100 backstroke, and the 100 breaststroke.

The relay team consisted of McCafferty, Lorenger, Sharp, and O’Rourke. They finished 14th in the event, out-touching West High by only .07 seconds. Their final time 1:53.06.

Sharp competed in the 200 individual medley, and had a time of 2:14.11. She placed 14th overall, scoring three points for City High.

McCafferty swam the 100 backstroke in a time of 1:01.55 for 20th place.

Following the 100 backstroke was the 100 breaststroke, where Lorenger competed. She placed 17th with a time of 1:09.42.

City High’s combined team score at the end of the meet was 16. The team placed 25th in the state.

“State just had so much energy, which makes it so much fun. So was the season with [Coaches] Zane and Jordan. All of their jokes along with us working hard made the season a lot of fun,” Sharp said.
