DIY Guide: Flower Arrangement

A flower bouquet is a perfect project for a gift or home decoration, and also so simple, without any extra hassle. Not to mention, being creative does not have to break the bank.

  1. Starting off with flowers, use any type or color variety that fits to preference. Sizes and quality of flowers depends on price. The more expensive, the better the quality usually. In addition, bigger vase arrangements need bigger flowers for a best flowers to vase size ratio. Scissors, pliers, knives, flower foam and optional craft paper will be beneficial to have on hand as well.
  2. Remove any price tags or plastic wrap from products. It is important to not cut into the leaves or petals during this process.
  3. Each stem length will vary according to arrangement size. For this arrangement, 2 to 3 inches were left on along with detachable leaf parts. Leaves add a natural aesthetic that will keep the bouquet looking full. It is recommended that leaf stems be purchased if they were not included in the bouquets/stems.
  4. Cut the flower foam (styrofoam can also be used) according to the size of the vase. Size will vary among all arrangements, however, the size of the foam should loosely fit into the vase and surpass above the top (measuring a centimeter for this arrangement). This allows us to place flower stems not only vertically but horizontally and diagonally without damaging the stem through bending. Optional craft paper of any color can be added into the vase to cover up the flower foam for a more cohesive style.
  5. Start arranging stems from the center out. Stems should be placed within close proximity, enough for petals to be touching one another, making our arrangement look fuller and absent of void space (see picture below). Since multiple types and colors of flowers were used, to achieve a most ‘natural’ look, white peonies were used as a background and majority color while fewer red and pink peonies and ranunculus’ were used to add a pop of color. Lastly, glittered poinsettias were used to add a subtle but different element.
    6. Enjoy the new arrangement! The project does not have to stop there, however. Ribbons, rhinestones, sand or much more could be added to personalize arrangements to your liking! Flowers, vases, and flower foam were all purchased from Dollar Tree
