Summer is on its way and City High sports are in full swing. On Tuesday, May 9th, the City High women’s soccer team headed to Dubuque for another match. Dubuque Wahlert Catholic High School, whose record was 3-8, hosted City High with a record of 7-4. The Little Hawks had won 3 games in a row and looked to continue the winning streak with another win.

The game kicked off at 4:15 at Wahlert and City was off to a great start. In the 7th minute of the game, Sam Schroder ’19 stole the ball off of one of Wahlert’s defenders, hit the ball upper 90, and scored her first goal of the season. This early goal gave City a lot of energy. City knocked the ball around Wahlert and created opportunities in front of Wahlert’s goal. With 16 minutes left in the first half, City won a corner kick and the Schroder sisters took control. Sydney Schroder ’17 passed the ball to her sister Sam Schroder ’19 and ran around her. Sam Schroder ’19 gave the ball back to Sydney Schroder ’17 and her shot hit the right post and bounced into the goal. Less than two minutes later, Sam Schroder ’19 served the ball out to Madeline Pugh ’19, who took a shot from out wide and scored. At the end of the first half, City was up 3-0.

Going into the second half, City possessed the ball and kept creating goal opportunities. In the 60th minute of the game, Grace Brown ’17 placed a ball behind Wahlert’s back line and Sydney Schroder ran up on the ball and scored. Within two minutes, Sydney Schroder had scored another goal and had scored a hat-trick. with 11 minutes left in the game, Schroder ’17 passed the ball to Sophie Van Meter ’17 and she placed it past Wahlert’s goalie. The final score was 6-0.

City went home very satisfied with their win. The team had 30 shots on goal and shut out Dubuque Wahlert. The City High Little Hawks play Dubuque Hempstead at their home field on Friday, May 12th. Kickoff is at 4:15 PM.
