On Friday, September 8, Student Senate and Art Club members met to discuss decorations for this year’s homecoming dance. The theme of the dance is going to be “Under the Sea” with a portion of the proceeds going to Hurricane Relief in Houston.

There have been some controversies on this upcoming dance theme. The senate members were thinking about raising the ticket price for homecoming to 7 dollars and donating the extra two dollars to Hurricane Relief. Maria Buri ‘20 suggested keeping the ticket price at five dollars and charging one dollar for song requests. So far, the planning committee has decided on this, but nothing has been confirmed yet. In addition to the price changes, they are planning on having a donation box available.

Some members of the senate on the homecoming committee thought that students would not donate any money if they didn’t have to. Others thought that forcing charity on students was wrong. “I don’t think we should force charity.” Stated City High’s student body president Teagan Roeder ’18.

Student Senate has begun taking steps to save money for the dance, in order to donate more of the profits. Some of these efforts include making the decorations themselves, with the help of the Art Club.

“I’m really glad we are working together,” said Roeder.

Zoё Butler, a member of both Student Senate and the Art Club, talked to the art teachers Dan Peterson and Michael Close about the decorations, and both were happy to cooperate.

“I’m happy that Art Club is taking what we do in the art room and connecting with other people,” said Dan Peterson.

A post was put up on the City High School Studio Arts Instagram page the day before the meeting. Around ten people ended up at the meeting. Candy was provided by one of the members of art club and everyone had a great time. The meeting on Friday was mainly a meeting for planning another meeting that was discussed. The meeting lasted until 4:30 and was successful.

“Planning an entire dance is very difficult, and Art Club is thankful to be able to take part in the process.” Said Maria Buri ‘20.
