The gym went quiet before the start of the volleyball game between Iowa City High and Wahlert Catholic. City High players lined up in pink jerseys, as Maya Morales ‘21 took the microphone to say a few words about fellow volleyball player Emma Nugent ‘21, who passed away this past summer.
“One of my favorite memories is winning the Spike with Emma last year,” Maya Morales ‘21 said. “This year we did it for her. We miss her greatly but she will always be part of the City High volleyball team. We love you Emma.”
The team won the Spike trophy during their game against West High on October 2. Then on October 8, during their last home game of the season, Emma’s parents came to watch the game.
“Seeing [Emma’s parents] really reminded me of her, and why I really wanted to play this season,” Hannah Fast ‘21 said.
After losing the first set of the game 19:25, City High came back to win the next three sets, the final set ending 25:14.
“We’re winning for [Emma] and that’s the bigger point,” Zoe Stanhope ‘21 said. “We really wanted to play for Emma and for her parents.”
