March Madness has come to two Little Hawk alumni basketball players.

With a dominating win over 6th ranked Georgia, Aubrey and Ashley Joens helped lead Iowa State to the Sweet 16.

Iowa State will face Creighton who upset Iowa on Friday, March 25, at 8:30 pm. The NCAA women’s basketball Sweet 16 will take place in Greensboro Coliseum Complex in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Ashley Joens, a senior at ISU, graduated from City High in 2018. Ashley is City High’s all-time leading scorer, and additionally holds records for most points in one game (45), season points (798) and career rebounds. This year, Ashley became ISU’s all-time leading scorer, topping Angie Wells’ record, scoring 2,355 career points. Ashley currently leads Iowa State in points per game, rebounds, and field goal percentage. She also won the Cheryl Miller award this year.

Aubrey Joens, a sophomore at Iowa State University, graduated from City High in 2021. Aubrey holds records at City for most threes in a game (9), three’s in a season (66), and career threes (224). Aubrey is 2nd for ISU in defensive rebounds, just under her sister. She is also 3rd on the team in three-pointers and holds the 2nd highest three-point percentage.

This is the first time Iowa State girls basketball has made it to the Sweet Sixteen since 2010. If Iowa State pulls out a win, they will play the winner of the 6:00 game, between number 1 South Carolina and number 5 North Carolina.
