Tonight, the top ranked City High volleyball team will take on the Cedar Rapids Kennedy Cougars in a match that could be a deciding factor in the race for the MVC conference title. The Cougars, ranked number two in class 5A, are coming off their third semi-final appearance in the state tournament over the past three years. They lost to West High in the semi-final game last year.
“We went to watch Kennedy last week,” Coach Trish Carty said. “And we have an idea of what they’re using, and how we can respond to it.”
Last Thursday, Kennedy played in the North Scott tournament. They came home with a 1-2 record, losing to number eight Pleasant Valley, and class 4A number 9 North Scott. City hasn’t relaxed any though.
“We have been practicing a lot harder, and scrimmaging more so we can get ready for gameplay,” Co-Captain Mickey Hansche ‘13 said. “If we can continue to focus on doing what we know we are capable of doing, we’re going to be ok.”
The sophomore and JV games start at 5:30 pm, followed by the varsity game around 7:15 in the main gym at Cedar Rapids Kennedy High School.
