Five select students from City High’s Model United Nations team will be able to attend Iowa’s first international Model United Nations conference this spring. These students will have the unique opportunity to be involved in the conference with 100 students from China and 100 from all across Iowa.
“I submitted just five (students) because I knew that numbers were already pretty tight for other schools,” Jenna Eastman, the Model UN advisor, said. “And we got all five spots, which was awesome.”
Eastman, who has been the advisor since last year, chose the students who would represent the school after they submitted applications. The students were selected based on their responses to the questions provided.
“We haven’t really started to prepare,” Toe Collins ‘26, one of the students selected for the conference, said. “We’re preparing to prepare.”
While the team has not yet begun intensive preparation for the international event, they have already started laying the groundwork for the spring conference that all members will attend, as well as the international conference. Both events will take place in Spring 2025.
“It’ll be like the normal Model UN conference, just a little bigger and a little bit more intense,” Eastman said. “It should be a good time.”
Students who are still interested in joining Model UN are welcome and can contact Ms. Eastman with any questions.
“If anyone is interested in getting into speech or public speaking, Model UN is a really good entry,” Collins said. “You also have a lot of people to lean on if you need help.”
