Kael Voinovich moved to Iowa City before his senior year so his family could be closer to his older brother who wrestles at the University of Iowa. Before moving to Iowa City, Kael had been wrestling in Stillwater, Oklahoma since he was 10.

“I was a little nervous about moving across the country to a new place but I’ve really loved City High. The wrestling program is really good and Coach Connell is a really amazing coach; I’ve enjoyed working with him,” said Voinovich.

During his sophomore wrestling season in Stillwater, Kael won state. The following year he was the runner-up.

“I have high hopes for winning the state tournament in Iowa this season, at Stillwater I felt like just another guy on the team. At City High I feel like more of a leader and there’s higher expectations for me,” said Voinovich.

After high school Voinovich is undecided between Iowa and Iowa State. Kael’s father is from Serbia which would allow him to wrestle for the Serbian national team.

“I’m not certain on where I’m going to college, but I want to wrestle for the Serbian national team, hopefully at the 2028 Olympics in Vegas,” said Voinovich.

The IHSSA tournament takes place February 14-17th at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa.
