Shawna O’Malley ’19 tries out for the City High Women’s Soccer Team, her third year

Girls Soccer Hosts Tryouts

It was the first day back from spring break, and for many girls, their first time trying out for the City High soccer team. Zoe Hellberg ‘21, who had only ever played soccer twice before with a friend, decided to give it a go.

“I’m not very experienced in soccer, but it was really fun. I really like everyone on the team and I’m super excited for the season,” Hellberg said.

The coaches spaced the tryouts into two different groups, the first made up of those with less experience, and the second with more. Shawna O’Malley ‘19 tried out with the second, and is in her third year of playing for the team.

“In past seasons I’ve been pretty nervous, just not really knowing where I stood on the team,” O’Malley said. “But I feel a lot more confident this year, knowing at least that I will be on one of the teams I want to be.” O’Malley ended up making the varsity team.

The coaches have the players do different kinds of drills before ending with scrimmaging.

“It’s pretty much like what we do every day in practice, except the coaches have clipboards,” O’Malley said. “So we do like diamond passing for a while, and then we do some scrimmaging. The coaches will watch you, walk around, write some stuff down.”

O’Malley wants people to know that tryouts are really nothing to get to nervous for.

“Just don’t be so nervous about it, if you went to open gyms beforehand you have nothing to worry about, the coaches have seen you play and they know you are nervous,” O’Malley said. “Tryouts is just one day out of you playing soccer on so many other days.”
