The Rundown: The Little Hawks are trying to keep their winning streak alive in tonight’s match up against Dubuque Senior HS.

The Dubuque Senior Rams defeated City High 21-0 for a shutout victory last season, but are only 1-4 after so far, after being defeated by Waterloo West 7-13, Dubuque Wahlert 6-14, CR Kennedy 9-19, and IC West HS 20-32. The Rams’ sole victory this season came against Linn Mar HS, 28-13.

Their early season standings are not indicative of skill level, according to Little Hawk head coach, Dan Sabers.

“They’re a very good team, they’re 1-4 right now, but they’ve played some of the tougher teams so far,” Sabers said.

The Dubuque Senior team includes returning quarterback Austin Clemens, and returning offensive line members, including offensive tackle Lucas Legrand, who has committed to The University of Iowa.

“They don’t really hang their hat on any one thing,” said Sabers, “but they like to spread you out, they run the quarterback more [than most teams], and they’re big up front,” Sabers said.

Mack Stolley ‘14, City High cornerback, is aware of the challenges in facing Senior.

“They’re good on screens, spread out the ball, and they utilize key talent,” Stolley said.

Defensively, the Rams mostly run a 4-3, but are known to mix things up.

“They’re a solid defense. West [IC West HS] has been averaging about 50 points a game, and they [Senior] held them to 32,” Sabers said.

Stolley and Sabers agree on the strengths City will bring to the game.

“Our offense has been doing pretty good, we’ve been close to 400 total yards every game, and Xavier [Xavier Washpun ‘14] has been doing a tremendous job,” Sabers said.

Stolley’s viewpoint comes from his training.

“The coaches have done a very good job of preparing us, it all comes down to the film we’ve watched, and staying healthy and hydrated,” Stolley said.
