Dubuque- The scene inside the gym was chaotic. The City High boys’ track and field team competed in their first meet Tuesday, an unscored indoor meet hosted by Loras College. The Little Hawks’ placed highly in the 50 meter dash, 50 meter hurdles, and shot put, and took first place in two distance races.

Tuesday was the first opportunity for many athletes to experience their events in actuality.

“I feel like we saw what we wanted to see, we were doing what we should be doing,” Tom Carey, boys’ head track coach said, “[it’s good] that we had a shot in the throwers hands and a hurdle in front of the hurdlers.”

In the 50 meter dash, Little Hawks Rajay Rodney ’17 and Vance Dillon ’17 placed third and fourth, with times of 6.58 and 6.72 seconds respectively. Ali Omar ’16 placed first in the 800 with a time of 2:21.41, and Jim McMillan won the 1500 meter run with a time of 5:09.01. Throwers were limited to shot put only due to the indoor meet, Eric McDonald ’15 placed 10th in boys shot put with a throw of 40’5″.

“It was a good warm up meet and a great place to start our year off,” McDonald commented.

According to both Carey and McDonald, the only problems that the Little Hawks encountered were due to lack of experience.

“Everybody’s in the same boat in Iowa because of the weather, but we’ve done good work in the winter, conditioning, running, lifting,” Carey said, “what we’re lacking is something we can’t control – real track equipment and venues.”

McDonald agreed that what the team needs most is practice.

“We’re just trying to get a day better,” Carey concluded.

The Little Hawks will be at the University of Iowa Rec Center for a varsity meet today, Thursday March 6th, starting at 5:00.
