Heartbleed Virus Causes Worry

Joe Weideman, Reporter

A new internet virus called Heartbleed has been found by researchers at Google. The virus would allow hackers to steal information that would normally be sent through secure encrypted channel. Another worry is hacker access to password protected accounts. Anything from Twitter and Facebook to emails and bank accounts are vulnerable. According to The New York Times, about two thirds of internet sites rely on the program affected by Heartbleed.

So what should you do to protect your internet activity?

Researchers have suggested changing your passwords, although that is not a surefire way to protect your accounts. Until the virus is fixed new passwords may be just as vulnerable as old ones. Ultimately it will be up to companies to fix the bug.

For more information, the researchers who found the virus have created a website that can be found here.
