What is going on with the Hawkeyes?

Two big wins against Michigan and Maryland made it look like the Hawks could win out and make a good tournament run, but bad losses at home versus Minnesota and at Northwestern leave everyone questioning whether or not this season will end like last.

The Hawks play Rutgers on Thursday which (fingers crossed) will be an easy home win before they play at Nebraska on Sunday. What’s most puzzling about the last four games is how inconsistent they have been.

In the two wins versus Michigan and Maryland the Hawks made 59 of 93 which is 63% and played dominating defense as Maryland and Michigan shot a combined 38.5% from the field and both scored under 60 points. In the two losses they haven’t made shots as they’re only shooting 37.6% from the field and scoring under 65 in both games despite the defense still being almost as good as the wins.

At this point I really don’t know who to blame for the recent non-success, it’s not like with football as Greg Davis, Gary Barta, and possibly even Kirk Ferentz that are to blame for the Hawks being bad this past season, but don’t get me started on football. Personally, I choose to blame the Basketball Gods for the Hawkeyes missing open shots.

Much of the credit for any of the offense that we’ve had in the past two games should be credited to Jarrod Uthoff who looks like the best player on our team by far. If Uthoff plays as well as he did on Sunday for the rest of the season the Hawks will finish off the season strong.
