The City boys’ and girls’ tennis teams competed at the team regional tournaments this past Saturday.

The boys’ journey to State ended in a heartbreakingly close match at No. 2 doubles, where Kunj Saxena ’15 and Max Gruber ’16 lost to Pleasant Valley in a set tiebreak. The boys were up 4-2 after singles, but losing all doubles matches gave PV the 5-4 win. Greg Hensley ’16 and Joe Hoff ’17 are the only City players who are going to the individual state tournament on May 29th.

The girls dominated over Kennedy and Clinton, both opponents that the team had seen earlier in the season. The Little Hawks beat both teams 5-0 to qualify for the team state tournament for the third year in a row. The girls have lost in the first round of State for the past two years, but they feel confident they can go further this year.

Eve Small ’15 and Innes Hicsasmaz ’16 will compete as singles players in the individual state tournament on June 4th, and Susanna Gianola ’16 and Bihotza James ’18 will compete as a doubles team.

City High will face Pleasant Valley today in the first round of Team State at Cedar Rapids’ Veterans’ Memorial at 3:00 pm. However, if it rains, the meet will be rescheduled for tomorrow.
