The City High Mens soccer team kicked off their season with a home game against Iowa City Regina on March 28th with a powerful 3-0 win.

With an upsetting loss in the sub-state finals last season, there was no doubt that the team was looking to redeem themselves this season with a squad stacked with veteran players.

“Losing in PK’s (penalty kicks) last year against Cedar Falls really brought us down last year because we had a team with so much potential,” said Gaby Baloci ’16, “however this year the team has been working on making this season even more successful, especially me since its my senior year,”

The Little Hawks kept the game set after an own goal coming from the Regina goalkeeper after Gavin Oliver ’17 put in a cross in the 9th minute. Although, keeping the tempo and pressure high, goals from Gaby Baloci ’16 (16′) and Mitch McCarthy ’16 (61′) put the game in the books for City.

Victor Brown-Rodriguez ’16 and Jackson Meyer ’18 locked down the backfield playing the entire 80 minutes making it difficult for Regina to create any offense at all and Mitch McCarthy and Colin O’Meara ’16 played well in the midfield creating chances for both Nasim Salih ’16 and Gaby Baloci to put pressure on the Regina defense.

With the solid victory to kick off the season, the team is looking forward to see what’s in store for the rest of the season.

“We had a solid win today and I think this game really gave us an understanding of how everybody plays and what the team plays like as a whole” said Cameron Chavez ’18

The City High Mens soccer team will travel to Kingston Stadium in Cedar Rapids to face off against Linn-Mar this Thursday starting at 4:20 PM.
