The Iowa High School Athletic Association just approved the 800m Sprint Medley (100-100-200-400) for boys track and field. For a long time, girls’ track and field have had more events than the boys. A few years back the shuttle hurdle relay was added for the boys making 18 events. This addition is important because it will give both boys and girls the same amount of events to compete in. Gender equality in sports has been strived for 1972 with the addition of  “Title 9”.

“I think [the Sprint Medley] is going to be pretty well received and will give that many more kids the opportunity to participate. I’m hopeful it will be a positive change,” City High Athletic Dirctor Terry Coleman said.

The track season starts in March and the addition of this event will give more athletes the chance to participate.
