Twins Abby and Lucy Rood share what it’s like to be twins

The incoming freshman are causing their fellow students to do double takes.

As a result of the rising twin birth rate in the US, there are seven of multiples in the class of 2020, causing City High Little Hawks to see double over and over again.

“We can communicate without words, I’ll be like, ‘you know that thing?’ and she’ll be like, ‘yeah, that thing?’ and I’m like, ‘yeah,’” Lucy Rood said.

The Roods are one set of twins among six sets of twins and one set of triplets in the freshman class.

“It’s nice having someone who has shared all your past experiences,”Abby Rood said. “So we just kind of get everything.”

The twin birth rate in the U.S. is climbing. According to CNN, there were 33.9 twins born for every 1,000 births in 2014.

There are advantages to having a twin.

“Not many people share that special bond,” John Bounds said. “I know many of my friends have older siblings, but they don’t seem to connect as well as we do.”

Beyond the advantages there are many reasons for the influx of twins.

According to Fertility Factor, a woman’s fertility begins to decrease as she ages. Once a woman is older than thirty, her fertility begins to decline more quickly and her chances of having a multiple pregnancy increases.

Doctors are theorizing on why, but have no clear answers to why older women are having more twins and triplets.

Twins at City High know there are more of them and the life that comes with having a twin.

“The thing that annoys me the most is when he says he can do stuff because he’s older, that annoys me, because he’s not that much older,” said Mary Bounds.

John is 45 minutes older, which is a lot according to him.

Annoyances aren’t the worst that there can be, though. According to consumer.heathday.com, women who are expecting twins can also expect a higher chance of premature birth, low birth weight, and other problems.

Madelyn Reschly-Krasowski also believes good parts can also be bad.

“She’s there all the time, she’s always with me,” Madelyn said.

Her sister doesn’t think Madelyn is super great, either.

“I have to share a lot of things with her, but it’s mainly because she takes my stuff,” said Justine Reschly-Krasowski.

In addition to couples deciding to have children later, In Vitro Fertilization is becoming increasingly popular. IVF is the procedure of combining a sperm and an egg in a lab, and then transferring the resulting embryo into the uterus. If a woman is having an IVF, she and her doctor may decide to have more than one embryo inserted into her uterus. If two (or more) embryos survive, this can result in multiples.

But even though they might seem extraordinary, they’re just the same as anyone else.

“We’re just normal people,” said M. Bounds. “There’s nothing special about us.”
