City High was undefeated coming into Friday night, but those with superstitions might have been lead to believe the 12-0 Little Hawks were doomed on Friday the 13th. The Little Hawks used their strong defense to turn a 25-20 halftime lead into a 19 point victory over the Saints from Cedar Rapids Xavier to give City its thirteenth win on the season.

“I thought the defense turned the game around in the third quarter. That was the key to the game,” City High Head Coach Bill McTaggart said of City High going to a full court press after halftime.

The Little Hawks defense forced Xavier to burn its timeouts by the end of the third quarter and were able to outscore the Saints 34-20 in the second half.

City was lead by Ashley Joens ’18 who finished with 23 points and nine rebounds. Kenya Earl ’17 also added 11 points. The Little Hawks don’t play again until this Friday when they play at Cedar Rapids Jefferson.

“We feel good about it and we have a week off. We’re tired.” McTaggart said.
