Fans got their first look at the City High boys basketball team on Monday as the Little Hawks took on 1A Grinnell in a preseason scrimmage. City was without key starter Keyshawn Christian ’20, but still picked up a double digit victory over the Tigers.

Grinnell gave the Little Hawks their best shot, as the lead alternated between the two teams in the first half. City shot 35% from three on the night and relied heavily on shots from behind the arc throughout.

City took command in the second half, leading by as much as 9 in the third quarter before a late quarter surge from the Tigers that evened the score. But the Little Hawks answered with a 10-0 run in the fourth, capped off by a crucial three pointer by Carter Westlake ’19.

Antonio Turner ’19 hit another three to put the push the scoring margin to 15, where it would stay as City picked up the 66-51 win.

The Little Hawks will kick off the regular season at Muscatine on Thursday, November 29.
