City High’s bowling program is headed to a state-qualifying meet.

While bowling is often considered a casual game played with friends and family, members of the City High bowling team are dedicated to becoming the best possible bowler they can be. Throughout the 2018-2019 school year, the bowling team has been one of the more successful teams at City High. As the state qualifying meet approaches, the team is working hard to make sure they are prepared for the tournament. Mike Degner, who coaches the teams, is focusing on improving the team’s fundamentals before the tournament.

“During practice, we focus on drill work along with bowling games. We work hard on our approach, footwork, timing, and spare shooting as well,” Degner said.

While the team is excited to compete in the state qualifying meet Degner is trying to make sure the team still stays focused in practice.

“We aren’t doing anything different. Just continuing to work on getting better and converting more spares.” Degner said.

Because bowling is a less popular sport among high school students, the team makes sure to advertise the sport.

“We have a youth league and we pass out fliers at the high school to let people know about the bowling team. We also have a group on Facebook and [we’re] are active on Twitter,” Degner said.
