The Iowa City School District announced Friday, September 18 that students participating in the hybrid model will return to in-person school on September 28. The week of September 21 will be a period of transition for staff.

The ICCSD previously said it would feel comfortable returning to school when Iowa City’s COVID-19 positivity rate was under 10%. The positivity rate for Iowa City on Friday was 8.2%. John Bacon, principal of City High, said face masks or coverings as well as social distancing will be mandatory for all students.

“Our teachers have been directed to set up their classrooms with social distancing in mind, where everyone is spaced 6 feet apart. We are hopeful we will be able to achieve that in all cases,” Bacon said.

Bacon also commented on how rules regarding COVID-19 will be enforced.

“We want to keep things positive while maintaining a safe environment for everyone. Our plan is to use next Friday’s advisory time to do a presentation for students about rules and procedures for in-person learning. We will carefully go through all information. This is for everyone’s health and safety,” Bacon said.

Athletics will also be returning to City High on September 26.
