As the weather gets warmer and April comes to a close, Culture Day approaches. After two other successful Culture Days in previous years, many students now come together to put on the yearly Spring event.
“One way I would describe Culture Day is a celebration of a bunch of cultures. There are so many cultures in the world, and I feel like with Culture Day, we can really express where people are from, what they do, what they believe in, and it’s just a big celebration that everyone can enjoy and learn about many cultures,” Anthony Reyes ‘25 said.
Multiple clubs, including MESU, International Club, and Latino Hawks, come together every year to plan Culture Day. For months, students from these clubs have been meeting in Mrs. McTaggart’s room every week.
“We have been meeting every Wednesday, trying to plan for Culture Day. We’ve had some problems and issues since we don’t have advisory anymore, but right now, we’ve had flyers, and we’ve been trying to advertise it,” Miamen Elawad ‘25 said.
During planning, a few problems came up, such as a lack of people wanting to participate. To combat this, the students worked even harder to advertise the event.
“If people want to participate in Culture Day, they should talk to someone who is already involved in planning Culture Day. They can also look for flyers throughout the school, scan the QR codes, and basically try to get as much information as they can for Culture Day,” Reyes said.
Culture Day aims to put the spotlight on underrepresented students at City High. The celebration is important to the students planning the event, as well as the school as a whole.
“It’s a great opportunity and chance to be a part of something big, that the whole school actually enjoys. Being able to dance and see other people’s cultures is a really good and fun opportunity,” Elawad said.
Culture Day is also an easy way to educate students in a fun and interactive way.
“It’s a really important event for our school, because it demonstrates how many cultures there are in the world, and how City High has so much diversity. Culture Day really shows that off with the fashion, the music, and the dancing. I feel like more people should learn about different cultures, so we all feel united as one,” Reyes said.
Culture Day is on May 9th, meaning that the day is getting closer and planning is speeding up. Students who are planning the event highly encourage other students to get involved in one way or another.
“I really think every student, even if they’re not participating, should come and see the show. Every student who’s a part of some culture should join Culture Day, because our school really needs more people like that,” Elawad said.
