Q: Where do you get your style inspiration from?
A: I get my style inspiration from a few things. First thing is just social media outlets. Instagram, Pinterest, and stuff like that are the easiest way for me to get style inspiration. I also talk to a lot of people in the fashion industry, like my cousin and my co-workers who work in fashion magazines and things like that, in order to broaden my horizons from just things that are on the surface level of social media.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I would describe my style as very multi-faceted. In a way that I can try to work any style I want to into my clothing.
Q: What do you think about when you put together an outfit? What components are important to you?
A: I try to think about creating a cohesive vibe to every piece of clothing that I put on that day. Whenever I’m
thinking of, like, specifically color, I try and mix tones that come together. Naturally, I try to mix browns and greens, I try to mix blues and whites, and I try to mix reds and yellows in a way that looks kind of natural. And in other ways, I try to mix pieces of clothing that come from the same time period so that it looks very cohesive.
Q: How do you incorporate your personality into your style?
A: I try to have fun with my style by putting in something wacky into some of my outfits in order to appeal to the aloof and funny demeanor that I try to present.
Q: Do you have any favorite brands? If you don’t buy retail, where do you shop?
A: Right now, my favorite brand is Puma, just because they are one of the most innovative brands in shoe making. But honestly, most of my shopping comes from just secondhand places. So local thrift shops, Goodwill, Salvation Army, things like that, but then also online secondhand stores like Depop and eBay.
Q: Do you follow any trends? If so, which ones?
A: I think that having a sense of fashion is all about following trends. So you know, right now we’re in an era that’s all about baggy pants and tight fitting tops, so I try to appeal to that, but I also try to incorporate my own things outside of trends, like very chunky shoes and very loud colors that you don’t see in a lot of trendy images on places like Pinterest and Instagram.
Q: What components do you think about when buying clothes (quality, sustainability, etc.)?
A: I think that one of the biggest mistakes that people make when they’re buying clothes is not thinking about quality. I think that quality is one of the biggest factors that you should be thinking about when you’re buying clothes, even when it’s from a place like a thrift shop or something. If you’re buying something from a thrift shop that’s only going to last you six months of wear, then are you really being sustainable, or is it just going to go into a landfill anyway?
Q: Do you have any tips for people trying to find their personal style?
A: I think that the most important thing in finding your own style is trying things that nobody else does. Obviously, you should be taking inspiration from style icons, but in order to really find your own style, you need to get out of that comfort zone and try things that you haven’t seen done before.
Q: Do you have any fashion icons right now?
A: I mean, obviously people like Tyler, The Creator are huge right now in the fashion scene. But I think that another rapper that isn’t as talked about in the fashion scene. Little Uzi Vert is a great one. And then just look at Ralph Lauren when he was young, look at the outfits that he wore, and that’s a great place to start for style icons.
Q: Do you think about accessories when planning outfits?
A: I think that accessories are probably the most important part of an outfit. What you wear as an accessory, down to what type of metal your jewelry is and what type of leather your belt is makes an outfit go from something trendy to something fashionable.
Q: What do you enjoy most about fashion and planning outfits?
A: I enjoy making something new that I’ve never worn before, just because it feels like a just because it feels like a part of my body that I’m changing every day and that I get to control.
