The results are in. The secretary and treasurer for Student Senate were chosen on October 7th. Claire Locher ‘26 won the secretary position by a unanimous vote, and Martha Willard ‘27 beat Sophia Castro ‘27 for treasurer.
“I’ve been doing Student Senate since last year,” Willard said, “I’m good at math, and I can keep track of things. I love Google Sheets, which is important for treasurers. I love making shortcuts, and I love making Google Sheets do fun things, which probably sounds really nerdy, but there you go.”
Locher had experience as a secretary already, and was also the only person to run.
“I have practice being a secretary because I have [been a secretary] for the golden beaker,” Locher said, “So yeah, I know what I’m doing … in that aspect.”
In other news, co-president Toe Collins ‘26 suggested that the Senate give grants to clubs to help with funding.
“We’ve been doing this for quite a while,” Advisor Steve Tygrett said, “Since [the 2017-2018 school year]…we’ve given away $20,000 to various city high clubs over the past eight years.”
For club grants, Student Senate sends out a Google form to club advisors, so clubs can request money and explain why they need it. One issue that came up was balancing giving money to clubs like Bacon Robotics and Model UN that require travel and expensive supplies, as opposed to other clubs that need less funding or have money from outside sources.
“Where does club funding come from? Does it include student fees?” Tygrett said, “There are some clubs that are funded a little bit, or have outside funding, but some don’t.”
