Sophomore and setter Hazel Schluckebier ‘28 reached 1,000 career assists against West High Trojans on October 2nd this season, marking a major milestone in her volleyball career.
“It was such a great feeling to hit 1,000 assists because that had been a big goal for me coming into the season,” Schluckebier said. “I am super grateful for my teammates that helped me achieve this.”
The milestone wasn’t unexpected for the setter, as Schluckebier regularly checks stats after matches.
“Hitting 1,000 assists wasn’t a huge surprise for me because I am someone who checks their stats after almost every game, so I knew I would get there soon,” Hazel said.
She didn’t realize she had officially reached the mark until her coaches announced it after the match.
“It was just a super fun moment, and it felt great to have my team beside me,” Hazel said.
She emphasized that the accomplishment reflects the team’s collective effort as much as her own.
“I think that this milestone isn’t just an achievement for me, but it’s also an achievement for my team and our hitters,” Schluckebier explained. “If my hitters weren’t as good as they are then I wouldn’t be where I am, so I give a lot of credit to them.”
Senior teammate Molly Carlson ‘26 said she has seen Schluckebier grow both on and off the court since they started playing volleyball together.
“She’s really broken out of her shell,” Carlson said. “She’s shown her versatility as a player and teammate.”
Carlson added that she believes Hazel’s leadership will continue to make an impact on the program after she graduates.
“I think she will definitely step up as a big leader on this team,” Carlson added. “As an upperclassman she’ll have an even bigger role to step into, but she’ll have no problem stepping up. People will look to her for guidance as one of the most experienced on the team.”
Her development as a setter has come from constant work and coaching.
