Fall bass fishing can be very challenging and sometimes it can be hard to find the fish. With colder weather rolling in, bass tend to move slower and not go for the fast lures that are usually very effective and good at covering water. This time of the year, bass are looking for easy meals and are usually pickier about presentation. During the mid-fall the colors often used in summer will not work as well as they used to. In mid-fall bass are going to be biting on Translucent colors: as water cools, translucent lures become more effective. Shad patterns work well in brighter conditions and cleaner water. Translucent chartreuse is a very good option for cloudy days or early mornings.
Ben and Jack’s Lure Pick of the Week
Ben- My pick for this week is a Whopper Plopper. Whopper Ploppers perform best when fished with a steady retrieve. It allows bass to track them from a distance or through heavy cover or dirty water. It also prevents bass in clear water from examining it, turning away once they realize it isn’t worth biting. A Whopper Plopper’s movement, action and profile are more important than its color. So, keep that choice with simple natural patterns in clear water and bright ones in dirty water. The top-water bite that Whopper Ploppers bring can make for some of the most unforgettable days on the water.
Jack- For this time of the year I have found a Berkley Powerbait 6 in. CullShad works great for big fall bass. I have caught lots of fish this time of year with this bait and have found it works great as the weather gets colder. I like to fish this with a straight retrieve while reeling in very slowly. Throwing this bait is fun because the bait is very big and often the bites you get are aggressive. I find that this is the best bait for fishing in the later fall months.
