Hotel Chauncey and Hotel Vetro, both owned by Hawkeye Hotels, shut down. Green State Credit Union issued foreclosure notices on November 18th to businesses operating inside the building, where they reportedly received no notice of the closure. SpareMe, the bowling and arcade inside Hotel Chauncey, was blindsided by the closure.
“I was utterly shocked and beyond disappointed,” Heather Sosman, general manager of SpareMe, said.
As for the impact on City High, David Mayes Butler said, “It is minimal,” and the front desk stated, “It does not affect us at all.” However, for the greater Iowa City area, it signals a worrying sign for the local towns’ business sector.
