City High alum Rachel Meehan ‘21 has joined the music department as the new assistant director of vocal music. Meehan will be leading several of City’s musical groups for the remainder of the year including Treble Choir, Advanced Treble Choir, and Select Treble Ensemble. She will also be involved in helping out with the treble prep show choir, Charisma, as they begin their competition season in the coming weeks.
“The music programs here were a huge part of my own musical development, and helped immensely in preparing me to pursue music in college. The band, orchestra, and choir programs here all have a rich history of excellence and are filled with students who are passionate and dedicated musicians,” Meehan said, “When the opportunity came up for me to join the team to help with this mission and give back to the community that helped me to get where I am today, it was a no brainer!”
Meehan was drawn to a career in music education for many reasons. She was encouraged by her family and teacher-mentors to participate in what music represents at its core.
“I was inspired to work in music because it creates intentional community and teaches us how to truly listen to each other. In the classroom, music becomes a shared experience that encourages empathy and self-expression, and helping students discover that for themselves is what motivates me every day,” Meehan said.
Meehan is planning on diving right into new music with each of the choirs and exploring a wide range of composers, genres, and themes.
“Music has a unique power of connection and is considered by many to be a universal language. I’ve seen how it brings people together, some who may have never otherwise crossed paths, in really meaningful ways. Music gives us ways to express emotion we may not have the words for, and helps us to find and use our voices in important ways,” Meehan said.
