One of the six boys and girls doubles headers of the season is set to take place on Thursday, January 29th. The last time they had a double header against Prairie, the girls’ team took the victory 65-39, but the boys’ team unfortunately took the loss 86-55.
“This is a very tough team, so I think we should go out and try our hardest, play unselfishly, and play together, because when we do that, we can compete with anybody,” Javeon James ‘26 said.
On the boys’ side, Prairie boasts a 9-4 record. Prairie boys guard Will Wehr is leading the team in scoring with 12.5 points per game, with Austin Jones just behind at 12 per game, shooting an efficient 43.8% from long range. For the Little Hawks, Chris Watkins ‘26 leads the team in scoring and rebounding with 15.5 points per game and 8.9 rebounds per game. A new spark to the team has been the recent starter, Iyon Harris ‘26, who is shooting 35 percent from three-point range and averaging 6.8 points per game.
“It feels good I told myself going into the second half of the season that I need to work harder and focus on what the team needs me to do to help them but just reps and confidence led to the games I’ve been having and the confidence I’ve been playing with and I thank my teammates for trusting me and I have a lot of trust in them as well,” Iyon said.
For the girls, Prairie is 7-8 and is unranked. After the Girls team’s big wins against both Waterloo West and then ranked number five Iowa City West, they’ve found themselves ranked number four in class 5A. Another storyline heading into the game is that star point guard Tessa Driscoll ’26 is only seven points shy of 1,000 career points.
“I think the biggest factor has been our team saying ‘we got us.’ This has helped us stay connected better and be better teammates for each other, and just overall make it a positive and hardworking environment for all of us. We’ve been able to push each other in practice, leading to better outcomes in games,” Kaitlin Loria ‘27 said.
The girls are also on a five-game winning streak and are currently ranked number one in the Mississippi Valley Conference. The Prairie girls are led by KeaOnna Worley ‘27, who is committed to the University of Northern Iowa and is currently averaging 18.9 points per game. She also leads the team in assists per game with 4.9.
