The boys basketball team has reached a hot streak heading into their sub state round. Winning five out of their last six games, including an electric senior night victory over Western Dubuque.
“It was surreal, honestly, it was great to be out there with my teammates thriving for one last time on our home court, and I’m gonna miss the arena, but I’m glad it went down the way it did,” senior Jack Lampe said.
Lampe had thirteen points, six rebounds, and four assists on senior night. Along with Lampe, many other seniors balled out against Western Dubuque. The seniors combined for 62 of the team’s 67 points, with Chris Watkins leading the seniors in points with 21 points, and Iyon Harris trailing him with 16 points.
On Monday, February 23rd, the Little Hawks travel west to take on Marshalltown in the first round of sub-state. Marshalltown has a record of 14-7, and has three players that average double digit in points. Kyle Smith ‘26 is leading the team in points per game, with 15 flat, and a 47.7% three point matchup. It’s no doubt Marshalltown is a difficult matchup against the Little Hawks.
“Sticking to the gameplan and staying in the present,” Jack Rogers ‘26 said. “We have all the keys we need to win the game, it’s just about executing and believing in each other.”
Early in the season, the Little Hawks had a problem with turnovers, but since then, have cut it down, and it’s translated into wins. The team now boasts a positive assist to turnover ratio, which has allowed them to prosper in the latter half of the season.
If the Little Hawks get the win tonight, they would move on to play Cedar Falls, the #1 ranked team in the state. Last season, City High’s season ended to the Tigers. This time around, they look to shock the world and make a run to glory.
The boys tip off at 7pm in the Marshalltown High School Gym tonight.
