It’s a full gym at Clear Creek Amana on February 7th as the City High Group Speech performs for the last time this season at the State Competition. At competition’s end, two of the four teams scored all ones, a perfect score in large group Speech.
“Our actors did so well on this show, it was an incredible show, and they have worked so hard,” Zoee Noble ‘27, the technical director of the One Act Play White Rabbit, said. “I think that this has been our best show yet.”
One team that got a perfect score was Low-Key Grocery. Low-Key Grocery was a mime skit thought up by Olivia Groff ‘28, Miles Lewis ‘28, Nina Renaud ‘27, and their Coach Mackenzie. The skit is about two grocery workers, played by Groff and Renaud, having to deal with an inconsiderate customer, played by Lewis. To keep the mood light, the background music for Low-Key Grocery is the Super Mario Bro’s theme.
“We were just going over music to play and my coach starting humming Super Mario Brothers, and we all thought that’d be really fun to do, so we found an instrumental and we got it to be edited to the length that we needed,” Renaud said, “During our Home Show, I got to play it on the trumpet, and it was so much fun. It’s a fun beat, everyone kind of knows it, and it just brings up the mood.”
The other perfect scoring team was Maas Group Improv, starring Rowyn Maas ‘26 and Aria Meyer-Fernandez ‘26. For the State Competition, Mass and Meyer-Fernandez’s skit featured a young doll-maker trying out for America’s Got Talent and their agent. In the Improv scene, the doll-maker trains for the competition by making unconventional dolls.
“I love improving with Aria,” Maas said, “She and I do a great job. We’ve been improving together for three years, so we have a jive between us and we work well together. I couldn’t have asked for a better partner.”
The end of the Speech season marks the end for five seniors and opportunities for both incoming students and younger experienced ones. The season will commence again in September, with planning for the next One-Act Play beginning in March.
“Speech is one of the biggest parts of my life right now, and I couldn’t be more proud of our team. Even though no one got nominated for All-State, we got really close,” Witten Johnson ‘28, an actor in White Rabbit, said. “I’m really excited to start again in September. Everyone does such a great job every year and I could not be happier about that.”
