Swoosh. The golf ball sails through the air, landing with a thud on the fake grass in the indoor hitting space at City High. Tess Anzelc is a sophomore on the City High girls golf team.
“I first picked up a club about three years ago, but I’ve officially been playing for two years. I first joined golf because my older sister had joined the team prior, and it seemed like a lot of fun based on her experience. Additionally, I joined because playing golf is a good life skill to have that I can utilize throughout my life, and not just when I’m young,” Tess ‘28 said.
The girl’s golf season began the season with their first outdoor practice following spring break. At the first golf meet on April 6th at Brown Deer Golf Course, the team placed 4th.
“I was looking forward to our team dynamic. It was so much fun last year with a mix of goofing around and having fun while still learning and improving our swings,” Tess said.
Playing golf has taught Tess to persevere through the good and the bad shots.
“When you’re playing in a meet or just casually, if you hit a bad shot, you can’t just give up, you have to try to recover from the shot and not let it drag you down too much to keep trying to lower your score,” Tess said.
Tess has been participating in sports from a young age, but golf is the sport that stuck.
“My favorite part about playing golf is how it can be played solo or in a social setting. Golf is one of those sports where you don’t need an opponent or a partner to play and to have fun, and you can just get on the course or hit at the range and have an enjoyable time. However, it can be very social as well. The team aspect of it is so fun because if you hit a good shot, the team will be so supportive of you, and it’s a great opportunity to catch up with friends while keeping your body moving,” Tess said.
Tess has learned to understand the time commitment of golf.
“Although golf is fun, it can definitely be a long game, especially at meets where you may have to wait for other people to finish as well,” Tess said.
