The Rundown:

The Little Hawks are trying to rebound this week after coming within one point from beating 3rd ranked Cedar Falls.

City beat the Wahawks last year.  In their opener, Waterloo West upset Dubuque Senior 13-7, after having lost to Senior the past two seasons. In addition, their 2013 team returns varsity members, like quarterback Alex Young and tailback Lance Dunn, who rushed for a combined 307 yards against Dubuque Senior.

“This team (Waterloo West)  has a lot of talent,” Jake Leohr ‘14 said. “Their tailback and quarterback run hard, fly around, and make plays.”

Leohr, who plays tight end and defensive end, is optimistic heading into the second game.

“We’re going to need to tackle well and wrap up. We might have lower numbers, but we play hard and with lots of heart,” he said.

Head coach Dan Sabers also knows what Waterloo West has on their team.

“They’ve got a strong running game and a very aggressive defense,” Sabers said.

Sabers also drew many positives from last week’s close loss.

“Special teams were very good to us last week, we need them to be good to us again. The o-line is sustaining blocks better,” he said.

Sabers also believes Waterloo West is just as talented as Cedar Falls.

“This is going to be one tough ballgame,”  Sabers said
