Student Senate will see a big change next year, as one of the Student Senate advisors, Travis Carlson, is stepping down.
“I am currently looking for another teacher to step in as co-sponsor, and hopefully I find somebody, because it’s a lot to do by yourself,” Steve Tygrett said. “Homecoming and Prom are [Ms. Gibbens’] responsibility. I try to help out with prom. Everything else is myself or Mr. Carlson’s responsibility, and I’m going to be looking for somebody else to help me out with that.”
As well as talking about the loss of Carlson, Student Senate went over prom. There were 625 tickets sold and Student Senate made a profit, so there is further funding for things like club grants. However, some things did not go as well.
“[There were] complaints about how blurry or dark the Polaroid photos were,” Yomi Hemley ‘25 said.
The photo issues were mainly caused by shipment delays.
“We were supposed to have the lights that crossed, but those didn’t come in time,” Student Senate vice president Ania Naso ‘25 said.
There were also issues with the IMU itself, like incorrect color of table cloths and lack of uplights, and insufficient reserved parking spots. The fall will also present some challenges with dance planning, due to Homecoming’s early date.
“When we start school, we’re going to have a month to get everything for homecoming ready to go,” Steve Tygrett said. “We have the parade on that Wednesday, the Powder Puff as well. The king and queen assembly, and, of course, the dance. It is a murderous time, and we’re not going to have a lot of time to plan it.”
Student Senate elections are nearing, with speeches on May 20th during third period and polls set to close at 3:45. Currently there are two co-president pairs confirmed to be running and one candidate still up in the air, who are Claire Locher and Amal Eltayib, Toe Collins and Alma Bhandary-Narayanan, and then Jesse Varner.
The end of the meeting focused on planning for the senior’s end of highschool and end of year events.
“Last day is Thursday, the 29th, so seniors are going to the grad walk, where they go to their elementary school and with their cap and gown and see their old teachers, and do the grad walk in front of all the little kids. Then they come back here, and student senate puts on a senior picnic every year on the front lawn. So that is all set up. Hy-vee is going to cater as usual.” Tygrett said.
