Student senate kicked off the year with its first meeting led by new co-class presidents Alma Bhandary-Narayanan ‘25 and Toe Collins ‘25. There was also another new face, however, Mitch Reuter, who replaced Travis Carlson as the new co-advisor.
The main focus of the meeting was planning homecoming, which is less than a month away.
“The beginning of the school year is absolutely crazy for us. Three weeks from tomorrow is homecoming,” Advisor Steve Tygrett said. “Basically, [student senate] here in the beginning are going to be asked to help out with [the dance, parade, or powderpuff].”
To start, the Student Senate narrowed down the homecoming theme options to then be decided by the student body. These include Sunset Beach, Back to the 50s, Disco Fever, and Jazz Club.
“Once we choose the prom theme, if any of you are artists and you’d like to do the creative part, we would really have to have a [ticket] design by next week,” Melanie Gibbens said. “The ticket is probably the most important and it probably takes seven to ten days.”
The last thing Student Senate did was for a list of City High Students’ accomplishments to present at the upcoming school board meeting.
“At the school board meetings, the main thing [class presidents] do is brag just about City High students’ accomplishments,” Collins said. “We usually try and get a list of things from the Student Senate body because… we don’t know every good thing that has happened.”
