After a hiatus because of the day off on Nov. 3, Student Senate returned to discuss club grants and the hunger drive, which will begin being planned at the next meeting.
“We need to decide where it is going. It’s gonna depend on if iJag needs it. Are we doing it for the school? Are we doing it all for community [crisis center]?” Steve Tygrett, Student Senate advisor, said.
The Multicultural Greek Council at the University of Iowa also reached out to place a drop box at City High as part of a program they are doing from Nov. 10-21 in light of the recent developments with SNAP funding.
“The reason I am reaching out is because we are hosting a food drive to help those struggling with the recent SNAP benefits restrictions and are collecting unopened canned food /nonperishables, hygiene/hair care products, baby products, and menstrual products,” Leah Takes, president of the Multicultural Greek Council, said.
Lastly, several club grants were also decided, including FCA ($200), Raw Bacon Robotics ($400), Math Club ($400), BPA ($250), French Club ($100), Environmental Club ($200), and Gardening Club ($200). Deciding iJag’s funding, however, was delayed.
“[iJag] did send a message out to the staff looking for more supplies for the City High food pantry. I hear that they got some,” Tygrett said. “I’m proposing that I follow up with her and see where they’re at, and then next week we can vote about whether to [give them funding] because we could… give them money, or we can tell [Ms. Whitehead] to go buy stuff and charge it to us at Hy-vee.”
