The season of hardwood is underway, and the Little Hawks girls basketball team are off to a hot start, going undefeated on their opening road trip, holding a 3-0 record. The team is currently ranked 9th in the state and look to continue climbing up the rankings as we enter December.
Senior Tessa Driscoll has led the charge, leading the team in points with 57 through 3 games. In their win against Ames, Driscoll went 7/10 from three in her 21 point performance. Junior Kaitlin Loria is another playmaker on offense, with 38 points in her first 3 games, while also having 23 total rebounds, being a force to reckon with in the paint.
Going into the season, questions swirled around how this team would perform, and how severe the losses of last year’s seniors August Palmer and Emmy McCommas would be. Last season, the team finished 16-8 and lost in the regional championship to Liberty.
“Players have been stepping up,” Head coach Lynsey Barnard said. “That’s where this team has been really good. Players have been coming together and making a lot of greatness happen.”
More players have stepped into the varsity roles to fill the shoes of last year, and have been making an impact. One player to highlight is senior Thisbe Lewis, who has started in all 3 games thus far. Lewis has put up 20 points and 20 total rebounds in her first ever varsity starts.
The teams best win in this three game start was against Maquoketa, the #1 ranked team in 3A basketball of Iowa, winning in a 36-34 defensive battle. The Little Hawks are seeking to continue their winning streak, as they play their first home game against Cedar Rapids Kennedy Friday night at 7:00 PM.
