Turning off Phones in School Can Now Earn Students Free Food and Discounts with Pocket Points App
There is now a way for students to earn free food and discounts from local restaurants by turning off their phones during school hours.
City High has jumped on board with The University of Iowa and West High in using the app “Pocket Points.” Once downloaded, the user will earn 15 points. After the initial 15 points, students will earn one point for every 20 minutes his or her phone is completely turned off. These points can then be redeemed at places such as Chick Fil A, Coldstone, and Panda Express.
The idea for the app is to combat cellphone use during class. Studies have shown that the less time students spend on their phones, the higher their GPAs.
“I think [Pocket Points] is a good idea, but I’m not sure I’ll have enough self control to do it,” Gabe Nkune ’17 said.
Your donation will support the student journalists of Iowa City High School. For 2023, we are trying to update our video and photo studio, purchase new cameras and attend journalism conferences.
