As a special Halloween treat, City Reads, City High’s book club, gathered in the library to tell ghost stories. The group read Haunted Iowa City, a new book by local author Vernon Trollinger, for their Halloween selection. Trollinger himself came to talk about the book and sign copies.
“It’s not every day you see an actual author, let alone get to meet one!” Jessica Onnen ‘15, a member of the club, said.
The book explores the supposedly haunted venues of Iowa City, from the many stories surrounding the legendary Black Angel to City High’s whistling janitor.
“[My favorite story] is probably the Alamo House. I don’t believe in ghosts. It’s one of those things that, if you make an outrageous claim, you’d better have proof to back it up… But that one just seemed real. Something happened to make those construction workers quit,” Trollinger said.
Haunted Iowa City is sold at Prairie Lights downtown and Barnes & Noble in Coralville, and is also carried at the City High library.
“[After reading the book], I’m going to watch out. It’s probably not ever going to be safe,” Onnen said.
