The ABC’s of Asking a Girl to Prom

Prom season is creeping up on us. And as boys try to hide from the fact, girls are wishfully looking at dresses and anxiously awaiting an invitation to the dance. With these simple key points, you should be well on your way to having a fantastic date to get your groove on with.

Ask someone you’d have a good time with. You want to have a good time and be comfortable, that means you have to choose a date you would dance with. Don’t waste a whole night sitting at a table because you don’t want to dance with your date.

“I would want to go with someone I know and my friends know too so that we could all go together. It would also make it way less awkward to dance with them,” stated Abby Saehler 11.

Backup plan. Don’t have your heart set on someone because there is always a chance that the girl may say no, perhaps already having a date. Keep this in mind and have a plan B if it does actually happen.  It’s not the end of the world if she can’t go with you. There are plenty of fish in the sea!

“I’d hope a guy would have a backup plan if he was going to ask me!” says Sarah Smith 11’

“I would feel really bad if I said no and they wouldn’t have anyone one else to go with. No one wants to be responsible for someone not having a date.”

Creativity. It never hurt to ask in a wacky or personal way. It shows her that you really want her to be your date. From rose petals, to cupcakes, to “PROM?” plastered shirts and signs, there are plenty of ways to ask that aren’t a simple text.

Katherine Vanderwoude 12, was taken by surprise last year when she was asked to prom in a way that had many girls talking.

“Karl Fleener was my prom date last year. I hung out with him a lot on the weekends but I had no idea he was going to ask me to prom!” says Katherine.

“While I was out shopping he put glow in the dark stars in the shape of “prom?” above my bed. Then he left a rose and a poem on my pillow so when I came home I read the poem and looked up. It was so cute!”

This adorable and creative invitation definitely scored some points with Vanderwoude.

“I think the more creative way you get asked to prom increases the Likley hood of a yes because it makes prom seem like a magical/romantic event. Everyone wants to have that movie perfect prom experiance and you can start getting excited for it soon after you’re asked.”

Don’t be shy. Honestly, there are only a few girls that aren’t interested in spending the night all dressed up dancing to great music. Chances are there is someone that is going to say yes. Jeremy Johnson 12, bravely asked his date (Lindsay Hall 12) for the whole school to see.

“Everybody looks at the big banner signs when they’re hung up, so figured she’d see it and like it,” recalled Johnson.

The banner wasn’t just a hit for Lindsay, it caught the attention of many walking through the main halls.

“There was a lot of people there, I was kind of shocked. Everyone else seemed to like it too.”

Early bird gets the worm. If she’s the apple of your eye, don’t wait around! She might be asked before you muster up the courage. Just go for it! You don’t want your top choice going with some other fellow.

Alexandra Perez 11 was asked three whole months before prom.

“I was at the state speech competition and I had just performed. Mr Lestina came up to me and said ‘Hey a judge told me to give this to you,’ and he handed me a note. I freaked out because I thought they were going to criticize my performance. I opened it up and it was a judge ballot. On the comments it said ‘Will you go to prom with me? I know it’s real stinking early but the early bird gets the worm!’ signed Phil Buatti,” Perez shared.
