At the beginning of the season, the City High boys golf team had a goal of breaking 160 in a nine hole meet. They achieved this goal in the sixth meet of the year at Thunder Hills Golf and Country Club.

The team had three low scores of the season with Jack Rogers ‘26 carding a 38, Drake Obermeuler ‘25 with a 39, and Nick Meredith ‘25 with a 40. The final score making the top four was Jake Mitchell ‘24 with a 42. After losses from Western Dubuque and undefeated Cedar Falls, their cumulative record improves to 17-29.

“I know that our round at Thunder was the lowest of the year, but we definitely have lower in us and we’re not [going to be] satisfied until we are on the top,” Jake Mitchell ‘24 said.

The team was back in action Thursday, September 8th at Bunker Hill Golf Course. The Little Hawks faced off against Linn-Mar and Dubuque Hempstead and Jake Mitchell’s prophetic quote came to be as City High got their first win in over five years. The scores from the event was Jack Rogers carding a 38 and tying for first in the meet. Junior Jake Mitchell carded a 39, as well as a 40 from Nick Meredith, and a 41 from Zach Meredith. They beat Linn-Mar by 1 stroke and Dubuque Hempstead by 8. This should be a huge confidence booster as the team finishes off the season and looks toward the postseason.

“We have a lot of great players on the team who have worked hard this season.  Early morning short game and strength and conditioning and this is all about them and their dedication in a team win,” Coach Phil Lala said.
