Fourth Annual Wapsie Leadership Conference Takes Place

A group of 49 freshmen and sophomores traveled to the 4th annual City High Leadership Conference at the YMCA Camp Wapsie. 10 upperclassmen leaders of City High were selected to attend the event and portray their leadership skills during the retreat.

After an hour and five minute bus ride, the group arrived at Camp Wapsie in Coggon, Iowa.  During their stay at camp, all participants were encouraged to step outside their comfort zone and get to get to know some people that they had never met before.  The coordinators of the event had prepared many group activities to get to know each other, represent life lessons, and to provoke leadership in individuals.

The first activity on Thursday afternoon after arrival was to get to know each others cabin mates by creating a poster that incorporated their own creative team name and team colors. Each cabin also made up a chant or song to perform when presenting their poster to the group at dinner. After multiple other activities introduced leadership skills to the group, the night was ended with a large outdoor camp fire.

On Friday afternoon before leaving camp, all participants were expected to write a letter to their future selves. These letters included goals, aspirations, worries, and anything else that an individual wanted to write to themselves. Those letters will be mailed back to them on the last day of this school year. The coordinators hope that everyone who attended left the event a changed individual, they hope they feel more equipped to lead in their community and to lead in our school; the school that leads.
